A wonderful month in Peru - trekking, biking and time in the cloud forest around Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

Indian Himalayas May 2017

A superb expedition to the Garhwal Himalayas of norther Utterakhand. Lots of glaciers, towering peaks above 7000m and high altitude passes.

Indian Himalayas December 2016

A wonderful month in northern India with a group of students from Melbourne, Australia. Wonderful scenery trekking in the Himalayas above the Kuari Pass. I am looking forward to returning in 2017.

Dolomites September 2016

Two weeks leading walks in the Dolomites of Northern Italy. I am looking forward to returning in 2017.

Switzerland August 2016

An amazing week of sunshine and blue skies in Switzerland. A lovely group of adult walkers made for some very enjoyable walking.

Ecuador August 2016

The last month was spent with St Margarets School in Ecuador. The team spent lots of time trekking in the Andes before spending a week on the Galapagos Islands. A truly stunning location.

Nicaragua June 2016

18 days leading an expedition to Nicaragua with students from Glasgow. We spent time climbing volcanoes, working on a community project and visiting the rainforest at Penas Blancas. Lots of contrasting environments and a great team of young adults.

Duke of Edinburgh Scheme May 2016

Bronze training expedition with Wallace Hall Academy, Thornhill. The team did well and are fully prepared for their qualifying expedition in a couple of weeks. Great sunset over Morton Castle and our campsite.

Nicaragua Recce May 2016

Two weeks in Nicaragua on a Recce for Outlook Expeditions. I undertook a three day trek in the North West Highlands in a true wilderness environment. Then completed another three day trek climbing the volcanoes of the Maribios chain. I am looking forward to going back in June.

Biking Borneo April 2016

Spent a few weeks in Borneo on a recce for World Challenge. A total of six days checking out some mountain biking routes and a day on the TAR islands reviewing a trek. Met some great guides and we enjoyed the hot conditions.

Sri Lanka March 2016

Spent a week in Sri Lanka with Jeddah Prep and Grammar School from Saudi Arabia. We spent time hiking, rafting and kayaking as well as 2 days working on a community project. The young team had a great time and learnt lots about the island (and themselves too!)

Vietnam February 2016

India January 2016

A month long expedition in Northern India with Launceston Christian School (from Tasmania). We spent time trekking in the foothills of the Himalayas as well as working on a community project. We also had time for white water rafting and exploring Rajasthan. The month was fantastic and I really enjoyed exploring India with this group of young people and their school leaders. Nordic Walking December 2015

Successfully completed a Nordic Walking course over the two days. Lots of useful information and advice provided by the tutors. Now I am qualified coach and it opens up some new opportunities.

BAIML AGM December 2015

I attended the BAIML AGM at Plas y Brenin over this weekend. The weekend provided an opportunity to catch up with friends and complete some great CPD. I managed to squeeze in courses on Child Protection, Ropework and Adventure filmmaking. After the rain cleared the views from Plas y Brenin towards Snowdon were superb.

WEMSI - Wilderness First Aid November 2015

I spent the week at Glenmore Lodge completing the Wilderness First Responder Course. The training was absolutely fantastic and gave the opportunity for lots of practical experience. The wintry weather added another challenge. It was so good that I think I will go back in 2016 to complete the Medical Technician course.

Duke of Edinburgh October 2015

Another great weekend managing a weekend for 3 groups undertaking their Bronze Assessment. The weather stayed fine and everyone successfully completed.

Training Weekends Sep to Nov 2015

During the three months, I acted as Duty Instructor for World Challenge at various venues training weekends throughout the UK. I also worked as a Training Instructor at West Linton and in the Lake District. At each weekend, there were many teams of young people learning new skills in preparation for their expeditions throughout the world in 2016.

Navigation Training August 2015

A fun day delivering Navigation Training for the Cunninghame Ramblers Group in Ayrshire. A great day on the hills with fine weather.

Madagascar August 2015

In Madagascar for a month with King Jamess School from Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. We visited National Parks in Kirindy, Ranomafana, Andasibe, Anja and managed to see lots of Lemurs and Chameleons. The team also spent a week working at a village helping to build a new nursery for pre-school children. Loads of great memories. Morocco and Mount Toubkal July 2015

Two weeks in Morocco leading a team from Banff Academy. Lots of fantastic memories and the highlight being everyone reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal. Two weeks spent leading mountain walks for HF Holidays in Adelboden, Switzerland. One of my favourite destinations and always great to go back to the Waldhaus Huldi Hotel.

Morocco June 2015

Duke of Edinburgh April 2015

Spent a weekend supervising a group of students from Wallace Hall Academy, Thornhill. The team were undertaking their practice expedition for their Bronze Award. A great weekend was had by all.

Swiss Alps April 2015

Spent a week in Switzerland scoping some new walks. Still plenty of snow in the mountains but Springtime in the valleys.

Morocco Preparation 6-8 Mar 2015

Spent the weekend at Comrie Croft in Perthshire with Banff Academy. The purpose of the weekend was help the team prepare for the expedition to Morocco in June 2015. Not long to go now until we will be scaling the Atlas Mountains.

Navigation Training 27-29 March 2015

A great weekend spent with Wigtown Ramblers delivering a course in navigation. There are few places in Scotland as remote as the Galloway Hills. The challenging terrain combined with high winds and lots of rain it made for testing conditions. Despite the conditions everyone enjoyed themselves and learnt some valuable new skills.

Never too Young 16-17 March 2015

Working with a group of young children exploring Hadrians Wall. They also spent their first night camping in Wigwans and, despite the rain, everyone had a great time being outdoors.

Institute of Outdoor Learning Nov 2014

I have completed the process to become an Accredited Practitioner with the Institute of Outdoor Learning. It has been a very worthwhile process and I look forward to progressing this further in the future.

Cambodia & Vietnam Nov & Dec 2014

A month long trip to the Far East with a team from Lilydale High School, Melbourne, Australia. We spent time trekking in the jungle, a week-long community project at a school in Cambodia and visiting some of the key historic sites in both countries. Zermatt & St Moritz August 2014

Three fantastic weeks walking with groups around Zermatt and St Moritz in Switzerland. Travelling between the two centres on the Glacier Express was great too.

Malaysia & Borneo July & Aug 2014

A great month spent exploring Malaysia including a jungle trek in Borneo and a community project near Kuala Lumpur. This was the second time I have travelled with John Taylor High School and they were a fantastic group. Great memories.

Expedition Training 21-23 March 2014

Spent the weekend as Course Director, overseeing 9 teams and 130 young people on a Training Weekend. The conditions were a little challenging but everyone seemed to have a great time.

A great day in the Cairngorms helping Laura and Innes improve their winter skills. Journeying in fantastic winter conditions - great snow cover, light wind and sunshine.

Lots of days travelling across Scotland helping teams to plan their future expeditions. Travelling from the Isle of Islay to Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh and talking to teams about expeditions to Peru, Costa Rica, Ghana & Botswana.

MTA Winter Weekend 25-26 January 2014

Spent a couple of days at Plas y Brenin in North Wales completing the induction programme to deliver the new Hill & Mountain Skills Courses. This looks like a really interesting development and its great to be on board with this.

Thailand & Cambodia Nov & Dec 2013

Just returned from a fantastic expedition to Thailand and Cambodia with a group of students from Tasmania. The group got to explore some amazing scenery, try lots of new food and learn about the culture and history of these two countries. I hope I get the chance to go return sometime soon. Wilderness First Aid 30 October - 3 November 2013

I have just completed a 40 hr Wilderness First Aid Course with High Peak First Aid, in Derbyshire. The course was excellent and I received great feedback from the instructor "Jim s performance on the Expedition First Aid course was outstanding. He has a quiet confidence that is invaluable not only in Mountain leading but also in casualty care. I would be more than happy for Jim to treat me and I look forward to working with him again". Another training weekend for World Challenge, this time with St Bedes RC School. A really fun weekend with a team travelling to Sri Lanka in 2014. I am sure they will have a great time on expedition.

Spent the weekend wild camping with Ellon Academy in the Cairngorms National Park. The students were training for their expedition to Tanzania and Kilimanjaro in 2014. Good luck guys.

Aegean Coast Sept 2013

Hot sunny weather on the coast of Turkey. Some great walks with a fantastic group of people - lots of happy memories. I am looking forward to going back sometime soon (maybe doing some Mountain Biking next time?)

Expedition Training 7/8 September

I spent the weekend training a group from Stamford School, Lincolnshire who are going on an expedition to Malaysia and Borneo in 2014. The group were great fun and I am sure they will have a fantastic time next year. This photo was taken next to Hadrians Wall near Hexham.

Borneo August 2013

Just returned from a great expedition to Borneo with Outlook Expeditions and Tiffin School, London. We climbed Mt Kinabalu (4,100m), spent time camping in the Jungle and working on a community project at the Sun Bear Sanctuary. Also camped on the TAR islands and saw this fantastic sunset over Kota Kinabalu.

Southern India July 2013

Expedition to Kerala and Tamil Nadu this summer. The trip was with World Challenge and the students were from Garnock Academy in Ayrshire. Spent a week working on a community project at a school and also spent time trekking in the Cardamon Hills. A few photos attached - there are many more!

Out of Africa July and August 2012

Brilliant expedition to Botswana and Namibia with John Taylor High School. Various destinations including trekking in southern Botswana, the Kalahari with San bushmen and the Okavango Delta. Then moved to Namibia for a community project, and trekking on the Skeleton Coast An absolutely fantastic group of 20 students and so many great memories.

Completed my Trail Cycle Leader Assessment today with Cyclewise around Coniston. Cyclewise are a great team and would definitely recommend them.

IML Assessment February 2012

In France for IML assessment week at Sixt Fer a Cheval. A great group of people and sunny conditions made for a good week. A successful assessment means that I am now a full member of the British Association of International Mountain Leaders.

Mountain Rescue Weekend October 2011

The rescue exercise I organised went really well at the weekend. Over 60 people were involved on Sunday including Mountain Rescue Teams, HM Coastguard, Inshore Rescue and RNLI. It was a great opportunity to work with lots of other agencies but the scary part was being interviewed on local radio and TV.

Costa Rica July & August 2011

Just returned from a fantastic trip to Costa Rica. The team from Wanstead School in London had a great trip spending a month in Central America. We squeezed a lot in e.g. a community project, trekking in the jungle, white water rafting, zip wiring and some time at the beach.

Jungle training course with World Challenge with overnight in a hammock. All set for Costa Rica.

Excellent trip to France. A few days in Haut-Giffre and a week near Le Grand Bornand doing Winter IML training. Weather very hot and sunny - more like summer than spring. Back next year for winter assessment

Helvellyn 27/03/11

Took a trip to Helvellyn and met up with Ann for skills training prior to IML. Fantastic day on the hills with little wind and lots of sun.

Galloway MRT 26/03/11

Joint Exercise with Galloway MRT. A callout resulted in the exercise being curtailed and both teams undertaking a search for a missing person.

Costa Rica 21/3/11

Went to London to meet pupils of Wanstead School who are travelling to Costa Rica in July.

Jungle Training 3/3/11

Travelled to Buxton for a weekend of Jungle and Bushcraft training in preparation for the trip to Costa Rica. Part II is in June and looking for to it already.

Winter Skills Training - Glenshee 26/02/11 & 27/02/11

Two days providing winter skills training for the Mountain Rescue Team. Great weather and some good conditions.

Glencoe 12/2/11 & 13/2/11

Climbed Stob Coire Nan Lochan and Bidean nam Bian. Excellent winter conditions but gullies full of snow so stayed close to ridges. More overnight fresh snow so we had a go at the new Avalanche Transceiver park at the ski resort. Got in some very worthwhile training using this new facility.

First Aid Training 05/02/11 & 06/02/11

First Aid training with Mountain Rescue Team and BASP. Really good course.

Southern Highlands 28/01/11

A couple of fine days in the Southern Highlands. Saturday climbed Ben Lui via Central Gully - in excellent winter conditions. Sunday walked up to Beinn Chabhair with patchy ice and snow above 700m.

Hart Fell in Winter 08/01/11

A superb day in the Moffat Hills with fresh snow at all levels. Winter conditions in the Southern Uplands at the moment so take full winter kit if venturing out.

Rescue Training 19/12/10

Mountain rescue training today in the Lowther Hills of the Southern Uplands. A casualty search and evacuation in the snow. A fantastic day to be out in the hills, cold but clear skies and long distance views.
